The Ramapo Orchid Society, Inc. is a nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to the love of growing orchids . We meet every month ( except July & August) at the
Flat Rock Brook Nature Center, Englewood, New Jersey.
At our meetings we feature guest speakers, hands-on workshops, and an opportunity to trade growing secrets with some very experienced members. We always have a show table, and affordably priced orchids from local vendors. Special events include our yearly show, a great auction, and a fun Xmas party. The society is open to anyone who shares our love of orchids, so why don't you come and join a terrific bunch of people.
We are an affiliated member of the American Orchid Society (AOS) and Northeast Judging Center.

Paph Little Trouble

Topic: Mini Paphiopedilums

Speaker: Ross Heller


Finally, the hot summer will be over soon, and we can start looking forward to our next meeting.

Ross and his wife Julia are the owners of Deerwood Orchids in Minnesota. They specialize in breeding Paphiopedilums, concentrating mainly on compact and miniature hybrids and species.

They have been growing orchids since the 1980's, but seriously got bitten by the orchid bug in 1999 when they purchased an assortment of orchids, including their first Paphiopedilum, at the Orchid Society of Minnesota plant sale.

That first Paph captivated Ross and sent him down the road of specializing in Paphs. Ross soon purchased his first compots and then flasks to learn how to grow seedlings and also acquire quality plants by picking the best of a group. 

While this learning process was going on, he also began to acquire divisions of awarded and other high quality Paphs to use in breeding.

Ross will share his growing experience and tips to grow Mini Paphiopedilums and will also bring plants for sale.

3rd Saturday of every Month starting at 9:00AM

The Notheast Judging Center has moved to a new location - now also at the Flat Rock Brook Nature Center, in Englewood, NJ.

Judging takes place every 3rd Saturday at 9AM!

The Northeast Judging Center of the American Orchid Society sponsors a monthly judging event.

There will be an educational forum and discussion in the morning beginning at 10:30 on a wide range of topics related to orchid judging. Plants being submitted for judging should arrive no later than noon that day; actual judging of plants begins after a lunch break, generally no later than 1 PM.

In addition to our monthly judging, we participate in a number of orchid shows throughout the center, providing AOS judging as well has taking part in ribbon and trophy judging at the show.

Finally, we have many knowledgeable and helpful individuals in the center who can speak on a wide variety of topics related to orchids and judging. We encourage all of the orchid societies in our region to utilize this resource.
